Laura's Baby

We had a GREAT visit with my dear sorority sister, Laura on Saturday and got to meet her new daughter, Emma Grace who was born last Monday. Laura was so generous and let me hold Emma for nearly two hours! She is SO cute. She is dark complected with lots of hair. Her big brother, Taylor, is not so sure of his sister (he was hoping for a brother). But he did tell me several times that his sister is "so pretty". Laura is a great mom and will be enjoying her long maternity leave. Her niece, Lucy, was born in the same hospital two days after Emma, so her family

is on cloud nine right now. God bless you Emma. I can't wait to watch you grow. You are a lucky little girl who have lots of people who love you!

Farewell Becky

Congratulations, Becky!  You have finally made it to my blog!
Becky, our physical therapist, has decided to move to Dallas and leave us :(  Her last day was this Wednesday.  We had a pizza party, and I made my famous dessert, strawberry pizza in her honor.  It is not a true pizza but resembles a pizza because it has a homemade crust made of powdered sugar, butter, and flour; a filling of cream cheese mixture, and topping of strawberries with homemade strawberry glaze.  It is SO good!  I meant to take a picture, but my anxious co-workers had eaten it before I had the chance!!  HA HA!  In all seriousness, I will miss Becky so much.  She calls me her mentor, but truly she is mine.  She has taught me so much, not only about therapy but about life.  She is so intelligent and has a rare talent to treat our patients as a whole.  She truly cares for them in a creative, fun manner.  She was constant entertainment, and I already miss her upbeat personality.  Take care, Becky!  Stay in touch. Wish you nothing but the best!

Anniversary Photos

Finally our internet is up and running so I am able to upload some pics from Sunday night. We had a great anniversary dinner. I had lobster tail with warm butter sauce, caesar salad, bread, and creme brule for dessert. Patrick chose the house salad, wolf fish, and key lime pie. We felt so full the rest of the night, but it was worth it. Also shown are our anniversary gifts to each other. The 6th Anniversary present is traditionally candy. Neither of us knew we were sticking with tradition, but I guess great minds think alike. I received a candy bouquet of Ghirardelli chocolates at work on Friday, and Patrick received blue and green personalized M & Ms.

Happy 6th Wedding Anniversary!!

Today is our 6th Wedding Anniversary! We have had a great weekend so far. Patrick has been in Houston for the past week and came home Friday. We had a great dinner at a new Chinese restaurant in town. We were so excited to actually sleep in Saturday morning (11:00 a.m.). It has literally been over a year I think. We are both big babies and hate to sleep apart so we had a lot of sleep to catch up on from the last week. Yesterday we did some shopping and worked around the house. We rented a movie, and after the movie was over decided to watch our wedding video. WOW! In some ways it seems like yesterday and in other ways it seems like a lifetime ago. We were so young (21 & 22)! We had a beautiful wedding, if I do say so myself. I dreamed of a big wedding since I was a little girl, my dad calls it the "Princess Diana Effect." I do think there is a lot of truth to that-watching her wedding as a little girl and seeing the big dress and long train. Anyway, we had a traditional Catholic wedding, over an hour long. I had a big A-line dress and veil. My bridesmaids wore sorbet (pink) and carried white roses. I carried pink roses. We had a nice reception at noon with lots of food, wine, champagne, cake, and dancing. It was a true celebration. There isn't anything I would change. To top it off, we had a great honeymoon cruise to Jamaica, Cayman Islands, and Mexico.
Honestly, the marriage has been so much better than the wedding. We are so blessed to have known each other, nearly 10 years now. We built a strong friendship through God and church for months before we actually started "dating." Once dating, I knew within a few weeks we were meant to me. Things haven't always been easy. One of us has been in school for our entire marriage, me the first two years in graduate school and then Patrick with his non-traditional teaching certification and now graduate degree. We have some great memories together, but it is our daily life that we love. Patrick is such a caring man who truly is a romantic at heart. He never takes me for granted and compliments me often. Just today in church, an elderly man tripped and fell...Patrick was the first one there to help and the last one to leave, taking care of not only the man but his wife as well. He is so funny, intelligent, and sensitive. I know I am not easy to live with, especially now with all of my hormones out of wack, but Patrick never complains. Our souls are truly happy when we are with each other.
Well, I will update later in the week when our wireless internet is up and running (I am on dial-up right now). I will show more current pictures of our anniversary gifts and from dinner tonight--we have reservations at Bone Fish Grill. I am going to order lobster tail!

High School Reunion

Well, I am a little late in posting, but here are some pics from my 10-year high school reunion that was held June 13th-14th.  We had a light Mexican-theme dinner at the school on Friday night and then a more formal gathering with spouse's Saturday night at Cajun's.  We had a seafood buffet of shrimp, catfish, and the works.  There was a DJ and plenty of loud music.  I got to catch up with my friends, Wendi (the top picture); Stephanie and Gwendi (the       second picture); Margaret (third picture); and Mary-Margaret (final picture).  Wendi and I were oddly enough not really friends in high school but became sorority sisters in college.  She is so much fun to be around!  She is in her second year of pharmacy school.  Stephanie and I were in Anatomy together and became friends through Gwendi.  My boyfriend and Stephanie's boyfriend in high school were best friends so the 4 of us hung out a lot together senior year.  Stephanie is an X-ray technician who delivers radiation to cancer patients.  She is the nicest person you will ever meet.  Gwendi and I had fun making fun of her new Southern accent.  In high school, she had a clear midwest accent and now because of her boyfriend and co-workers from southern Arkansas, she has a definite change in her s-y-l-l-a-b-l-e-s!  It is very becoming of her though as is her new hair-do.  I'm super jealous.  Gwendi.  Where do I start?  Gwendi and I became friends on a trip to Washington, D.C. junior year.  She is a talker, and talked my ear off the entire airplane trip.  She introduced me to every guy I dated in high school.  We had many happy memories together.  I was a bridesmaid in her wedding in 2001 (I caught her bouquet and got engaged a few weeks later), and then she served as my bridesmaid a year later.  She is married to her high school sweetheart, Emmett, who is in the Army (where she works as a civilian) and has a beautiful daughter, Evie.   I had so much fun seeing Evie over the weekend.  I hadn't seen her since she was about a month old (she's 3 now).  Margaret and I were Chemistry partners junior year.  Thank God for Margaret!  Chemistry was definitely not my strong suit.  We had several classes together actually, I think Honors English a year or two.  She lights up a room with her smile.  I always felt happy being around her.  I haven't seen her in more than 5 years, and it was great catching up with her.  She has a great husband and is happy with her job as a grant writer for health programs.  Mary-Margaret and I go way back.  We took dance together in elementary school and went to junior high and then high school together.  She is happily married and is the alumni director/fundraiser for our high school now.  She helped plan the reunion, and did a great job.  She was shocked to hear Corkie was still alive.  She asked if we had any pets.  I said, "you remember Corkie."  She said "yes, do you have one of her decendents?"  I said, "No, it IS her!"  HA!  All-in-all, it was a great weekend, even though I feel extremely old!!

The Circle of Life

Well working in a nursing home has its definite ups and downs.  This past week or two has been full of downs.  Of course working with the elderly and sick, I see many patients pass away. Usually, however, those residents that die are not currently on therapy caseload.  They have been discharged due to hospice/worsening illness or go to the hospital and never come back. So in some ways, I remain removed from the situation.  I never actually face it head on, until last week...  A patient of mine (Mrs. H.) whom I had become close with actually had a massive heart attack and died while in my room, just the two of us.  For the first few days, it was somewhat traumatic reliving the experience.  We had just finished our 45 minute therapy session, she was laughing, talking and within one instant, she collapsed.  Despite all the nurses and wonderful care we provided, she didn't make it.  Although I have experienced death around me, never so close, so sudden.  Compounding on this a day later, a vibrant patient (Mr. L.) who was returning home in a couple of weeks to live independently suddenly passed away with a blood clot only a couple of hours after our session.  Wow.  4 years of working and never a week like this I thought.  How can I keep this up?  Then after much reflection and prayers, I began to look at the situation differently.  How blessed I was to be with Mrs. H. in her final moments on earth.  Despite initial depression and sadness about being in a nursing home, she had begun to find peace in her final days and was very happy.  We were eating ice cream and laughing her final few minutes on Earth.  It's almost as if she knew... she was content with her life and ready to go.  During my final session with Mr. L. the day after Mrs. H died, he began to cry, out of the blue, about how he missed his wife and his two sons who had preceded him in death... Did he too know on some level it was his time?  He began to tell me that "you never know what an impact your life will have on others."  He reminisced about his youthful days as a WWII soldier in Japan.  After the US had bombed a village, a Japanese woman came out of her home with her skin literally falling off her body from the burns.  She had no clothes on.  Through sign language, she asked him to shoot her (to relieve her from her misery).  Mr. L refused to shoot her.  He couldn't do it.  He wanted her to survive if possible.  He rushed her to a medic, and she eventually made it to the hospital and did survive.  On his last few moments on earth, Mr. L stated "I always wondered if my decision to not shoot her made a difference in the world." Here is someone who couldn't remember what he had for lunch but could vividly see this Japanese woman in his memory and wondered what had happened to her.  Did she go on to do great things?  Raise wonderful children?  Because of his decision not to shoot her despite her begging.  He ended our last conversation together with, "Maybe one day I'll finally see her again."  Did he know that only a few hours later he would be seeing her again?  So the moral of this story is... this week, although difficult, has really served as a blessing.  I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to spend quality time with these patients in their final days.  I learn so much every day.  Life is really precious and can be over in an instant.  It really makes you appreciative of everything.

Well, you are probably wondering what Whiskey has to do with all of this.  Yes he is alive, but only after quite a scare and $400 of medical bills!  A trip to the emergency vet in the middle of the night followed by two consecutive vet appointments discovered not much of any explanation of his terrible illness--unable to walk, not eating or drinking, hiding under the bed, and severe fatigue.  The good news is his week of illness has finally come to an end.

Thanks for reading this.  I hope it has inspired you to live every moment.  I am the worst about looking to the future but through prayer am hoping to live more in the present.

Devastated

Well, It's over for Hillary :(  I am literally sick about what might have been...
I have waited my whole life to see her as President.  I just can't believe it.  I was lucky enough to grow up in Arkansas politics and knew Bill, Hillary, and Chelsea. Let me assure you that she truly is a good person and passionate about helping others. Bill & Hillary believe their life's purpose is to better other's lives.  She would have been an awesome president!  Oh well, I guess there is always 2012.

Things are good here.  Mom and I made a "quick" 6 hour trip (3 each way) yesterday to the hospital.  She was collecting fluid under her incisions that had to be drained.  She has to go back Friday, but since Patrick is out of school now (lucky dog), he gets to drive!

I rearranged my living room Saturday.  It started with a new purchase-a flat-screen TV!  Finally we've moved into the 21st century.  Then I started moving things around.  It looks awesome!  Instead of boxy furniture, it is all slanted now and much more home-like. I love it! The animals, on the other hand, are completely freaked out by it. They can't find their favorite spot now.

I am getting ready for my 10-year high school reunion, which is weekend after next.  I can't believe I am so old!  I get my hair done tomorrow and then nails & eyebrows next week.  Fun stuff.  I'll keep you posted!
